24Hour Start up

What a great idea. These guys have given themselves 24 hours to start a business from scratch and launch a working website all in 24 hours.
Here is the site, and they have also set up a number of ways of watching their progress.
Video clips at Ustream
There is an interview with the founder on e-consultancy here and they have put the business up for sale on eBay

I applaud them as an experiment Whether its a viable business who knows but necessity is the mother of invention and I often think that more time does not always mean better solutions. Recently I helped out on Nabs FastForward course and the participants were only allowed 10 mins to present a complete pitch - to be honest it was more inspiring listening to a 10 minute pitch and realising what you can fit in and achieve than a 2hr one for sure. Good luck to these guys.

Amnesty does its own Million Dollar Homepage
This time a really nice variation 1 million clicks against poverty - a million pixels - a million clicks. Each click of your mouse reveals a pixel of a hidden picture.

Great idea, nice and easy and what is very interesting and clever is that after clicking 10 times a message comes up to let you publicize your involvement and invite freinds to help via social networks.

and if you click 100 times then an invitation to use your time to volunteer and get involved in Amnesty ongoing work.

Another great example of a brand responding to user/customer types. Realising that different levels of engagement exist and creating customer journeys for each various type. Not trying to force everyone down the same tunnel.

Using Twitter to make money
I've seen a couple of examples recently of companies using twitter purely and simply as a cheap direct sales tool.
This is great for clients who can't or aren't allowed to measure activity purely in terms of branding. The two examples that I think are very simple are Dell and Jet Blue
1. Dell

Dell outlets has a twitter page and its very simple they publish alerts of new stock items and special offers with unique codes for Twitter so they can track sales back. So far they have over 1million followers and have sold over $3million worth of stock. Brilliantly simple.
2. Jet Blue
Jet Blue the personal jetting site worked out they saw very little sales in August due to the business audience going on holiday so they issued an exclusive twitter offer.

Buy any one flight in the month of Auguest and travel for the rest of the month free. Withing 2 days they sold out their entire August inventory something they have nver done in the prvious few years trading.

It just goes to prove simple easy use of social media tools can work, and it can be tracked back to Sales and ROI pretty easily.

Twitter Again

I don't like twitter that much and have not used it but I did spend a good few minutes looking at this piece of genius someone has made an app - called the twitter fall where you can view live the chatter on any subject or keyword you like.
If you run a brand, work for a particular company or client, its worth putting in your company or clients name in and just watching it for a few minutes - real live reputation stuff - now if you are really confident you publish this on your site letting your visitors see what everyone is talking about real time - good if you are the owner of kindle or the distributor of Watchmen but not so hot if you are RBS or Fred the shred.

Skittles Virtual Site

There has been a lot of noise recently about Skittles latest online foray. Rather than create a traditional web site, Skittles have turned their web presence in to a virtual site. It is a great idea and although they are'nt the first people to do this they are one of the first big brands to embrace the concept. Their advertising is located on You Tube, their news and pr on twitter, their fans on facebook etc.
Not only is it cheap as the site is just the portable navigation panel on the top left that follows you about the web, its also very of the moment and shows an understanding of the way people are behaving right now. Shame about the heavy handed legal disclaimer on the big box talking about responsibilities for other people's content. Oh well that is the corporate beast Masterfoods at work at least they are doing it.

Nostalgic connections

This map showing cables running over the world in 1906 really shows Britain at the hub of the world - the empire and the special relationship.
Funny looking at something like this today it reminds you of a social network and how technology and connections have been hand in hand for many years - maybe there is a new type of social anthropology and technology discipline that people will be learning about in a few years.
Anyway its retro and cool.

BK Whopper Sacrifice
WOW! those guys at Burger King are in the news everyday for cranking out cool digital work at the moment.

In order to get a free Whopper you have to sacrifice (give up) 10 of your so called friends in face book (not much of a dilemma here). Another great example of a brand doing something fun and good for once using social network sites in the right way. There have only been a few - I thought the O2 promotion last year at the dome was brilliant too.
So many people get it wrong but BK have been doing great work for years so its hardly surprising they have nailed this one - the pr opportunity is likely to be massive, and measurable - I can already feel the 'We saw 10,000,000 friends traded for a million burgers that's how much you love the whoppers' ad coming. Apparently there are people forming groups on face book to offer themselves as sacrificial stooges. You know you are on to something when it takes a life of its own.
